Book 09 – The Last Years of Steam Around The East Midlands
The eastern border of The Last Years of Steam around the East Midlands is broadly that of the East Coast Main Line through Welwyn, Peterborough and Stoke Bank to Newark, while its western border includes London Marylebone, Bicester, Banbury, Rugby and Nuneaton, before linking northwards via Burton-on-Trent and Nottingham.
There is coverage of the Great Central route including Aylesbury, Brackley, Helmdon for Sulgrave, Woodford Halse, Catesby Tunnel, and Lutterworth. However, it is the branch lines, most of which no longer exist today, that will probably be most enjoyed including: Buckingham, Dunstable, Huntingdon East, Leicester West Bridge, Leicester Belgrave Road, Newport Pagnell, Towcester, and Uppingham; also included are visits to a number of long-closed East Midlands ironstone railways. In addition to steam locomotives, some of their diesel replacements will also be seen.
The photos, a combination of colour and monochrome and taken in the 1950s and 1960s, come mainly from those taken by the author and his late father, virtually all of which have never previously been published. In addition, all photographs are accompanied by an extensive and informative commentary.
