Foss Cross - 3rd August 1961.
Foss Cross is quite an isolated station high in the Cotswolds between Cirencester and Cheltenham on the old Midland & South Western Junction line. In its day this was something of a busy startegic link between the port of Southampton and the industrial Midlands. After it became part of the greater GWR the traffic was transferred away to other lines and, despite an upsurge of traffic in WW2, the line ended up as something of a rural backwater. Foss Cross at this time saw only one passenger train each way a day.
This is the oldest recording we made by quite a long margin and I have left on my dad's announcements. It was recorded on my 10th birthday, 3rd August 1961; my treat for the day was a visit to Stonehenge but of course we fitted in various railway visits on the way there and back!
