The archive of tape recordings built up by my late father and me totals scores and scores of individual tapes.
Not all are railway recordings, my father would record things like 'Sing Something Simple' on a Sunday night and I would record 'Pop', from Pick of the Pops with Alan Freeman to lots of interviews with The Rolling Stones.
The very earliest railway recording was done on my tenth birthday, 3rd August 1961, at Foss Cross station on the MSWJR line between Cirencester and Cheltenham.

I have been very selective in the 59 recordings that I have transcribed onto the website. By far the majority of the original recordings have been rejected: many are of too poor a quality, nothing has been included post August 1968, none of the many industrial recordings have been put on, there is only one of the overseas locations included, some are very similar to others and a surprising number I am not sure of exactly where/what they are - all in all there must be hundreds of recordings that haven't made it. Even so it has been a long slow time consuming process involving a lot of effort, not just with the recordings but also finding all the others bits & pieces such as photos, tickets and diary entries - I hope you will think it has been worth it.
The recordings are freely downloadable and I know have been used by broadcasters including the BBC. If you do use them in some form all I ask is that you credit me as the source and perhaps even put in a link to my website.
