Chipping Campden Bank - 26th May 1963.
The Sunday evening Hereford - Worcester - London Paddington express with 7031 Cromwell's Castle climbing Chipping Campden Bank; recorded just below the tunnel entrance on 26th May 1963. I have left my father's announcements on at the end of the recording.
When the tunnel was being built the 'Battle of Chipping Campden' happened here with the contractors on the one side and Brunel on the other. I believe my great-great grandfather - Jonathan Lanchbury - was involved in this and later went on to work for the Oxford, Worcester & Wolverhampton Railway. One of his sons who also worked locally on the railway (GWR by then) - Henry James Lanchbury - was killed aged 25 in 1884 falling off the locomotive whilst larking about on a coal train from South Wales.
